Grace does not always appear gracious. When life is flowing smoothly, we tend to be content with our identification as an individual. It is when we hit speed bumps we are more likely to stop and look at who or what is no longer enjoying the identification as an individual. Often, it is the “misfortunes” in life that open space to look beyond the superficial. Sometimes, it takes a storm cloud to make us aware of the vastness of the sky. Once again, to quote St. Francis of Assisi, “What you are looking for is what is looking.” Stop . . . notice the silent awareness, which does not change, which is not subject to the whims of life, and be free.
